International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship

Introduction

To meet the growing demand for professionals in Chinese language education, promote the development of Chinese language education worldwide, and support the growth of talents in this field, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation(CLEC)has established the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship. This scholarship focuses on cultivating qualified overseas Chinese language teachers. We welcome relevant recommending institutions to nominate outstanding students for the Bachelor's Degree in Chinese Language at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. 

Eligibility

1. High school graduate or equivalent. Graduating students must provide a pre-graduation certificate issued by their school and obtain their high school diploma prior to enrollment.

2. Non-Chinese citizens holding a valid foreign passport, in compliance with the relevant regulations of the Chinese Ministry of Education, including the “Document No. 12 (2020) of Ministry of Education of the PRC" and etc.

3. Be friendly to China, have no criminal record, abide by the laws and regulations of China and the rules and regulations of the university;

4. Be in good physical and mental health , be in good academic and behavioral standing;

5. Be interested in Chinese language education and related work;

6. Aged between 16 and 25 years old (calculated as of September 1, 2026);

7. Attain a minimum score of 200 on the HSK Test (Level 5) as well as 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).

Application Procedure

1. The online system「International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship application website」( http://www.chinese.cn) ,is available from March 1, 2026. Please sign and log in, search for recommending institutions and Shanghai Jiao Tong University; upload application materials online.

2. Simultaneously, log in to the study@SJTU application system (http://apply.sjtu.edu.cn), select the “Bachelor”→"International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship”, fill out and submit the application form.

3. SJTU will review the applicants' materials. Those who pass the material review are required to participate in an interview organized by the university. The interview schedule and other specific requirements will be notified via email.

4. The CLEC will entrust an expert panel to review the applications. Decisions will be made based on HSK and HSKK scores and levels, and in consideration of country distribution as well as other factors. The results will be published about three months before school starts.

5. After confirming with the scholarship recipients, SJTU will send out the Letter of Admission, Visa Application Form for Foreigners to Study in China (JW202 Form), and other relevant documents to the personal e-mail address of the scholarship recipients Scholarship recipients shall register at SJTU on the designated date as per the letter of admission.

6. Applicants who have passed the review of SJTU but failed to pass the final review still have the opportunity to be enrolled at SJTU as self-funded students.

Application Materials

If the materials are not in Chinese or English, notarized supporting documents must be provided. 

1. A scanned copy of passport photo page.

2. A scanned copy of score reports of the HSK and HSKK tests (within the two-year validity);

3. A recommendation letter signed by the head of the recommending institution (with an objective evaluation of applicant and indicating whether or not a Confucius Institute student; in-service Chinese language teachers shall provide proof of employment and a reference letter from the employer);

4. A certificate of the highest diploma (or proof of expected graduation);

5. High school transcript;

6. Self-statement;

7. Applicants who have received the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Certificate during Chinese Bridge competitions may submit their application documents along with their scholarship certificates to the Host Institutions directly at the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship website. For any further inquiries, please contact chinesebridge@chinese.cn;

8. Applicants under the age of 18 must submit a letter of attestation signed by the legal guardian in China;

9. Applicants shall submit other additional documents at the request of SJTU;

10. Applicants with one or both parents who are Chinese citizens must provide:

10.1 Certificate of the applicant’s foreign nationality obtained at birth or afterward.

10.2 For applicants who acquired foreign nationality at birth:

a. If one or both parents were Chinese citizens and had permanent residence abroad at the time of the applicant's birth, provide the corresponding permanent residence proof of the parent(s). 

b. If one or both parents were Chinese citizens and did not have permanent residence abroad at the time of the applicant's birth, provide a certificate of the applicant's renunciation of Chinese nationality for at least four years by April 30 of the application year.

10.3 For applicants who are originally Chinese citizens and later acquired foreign nationality, provide proof of cancellation of their Chinese residence registration and renunciation of Chinese nationality for at least four years by April 30 of the application year.

10.4 All visas, residence permits, and entry/exit records for China, starting from the applicant's first passport.

Note: Applicants who previously held a "People's Republic of China Travel Document" or "People's Republic of China Exit and Entry Permit" must provide the relevant documentation as in section 10.3.

Others

1. Incomplete or inadequate applications will not be processed.

2. Application shall be terminated if the related materials are found to be fraudulent or filled and submitted by someone other than the applicant.

3. Students who cannot register in SJTU on the scheduled time should write to SJTU stating the facts and reasons 15 days prior to the admission date. Those who fail to register without a valid cause shall have their scholarship revoked.

4. Students who fail to pass the pre-enrollment medical examination, withdraw from school before completing the program, fail to register at the university without prior permission, or suspend their studies will be disqualified for the scholarship.

5. Degree students are subject to the annual assessment according to the Annual Appraisal Procedures of International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship.
