On March 2, a delegation led by Zhanseit Tuimebayev, Rector of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, visited Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Liu Weidong, Vice President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, met with the delegation at the Minhang Campus. The two sides held friendly discussions on deepening inter-university cooperation.
Liu Weidong warmly welcomed Rector Tuimebayev and his delegation. He noted that Shanghai Jiao Tong University places great importance on higher education collaboration with Central Asia. As a leading institution in the region, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University is an important partner of SJTU. Looking ahead, the two universities could further strengthen cooperation in fields such as materials science and energy, while promoting deeper collaboration through joint talent cultivation, exchanges of students and scholars, and the establishment of joint laboratories, thereby advancing educational cooperation between China and Kazakhstan.
Rector Tuimebayev introduced the development and internationalization efforts of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. He emphasized that Kazakhstan has been engaging in cooperation with China since the 1990s. In the field of education, the university hosts the largest Confucius Institute in Kazakhstan, which has trained more than 3,000 Chinese-language professionals to date, laying a solid foundation for mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples. He expressed hope that the two universities will further expand the scope and depth of their collaboration in the future and jointly contribute to the development of education in both countries.
During the visit, Rector Tuimebayev and his delegation also toured the SJTU Institute of Translational Medicine.
Representatives from the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Global College, and the School of Electrical Engineering attended the meeting.
Located in Almaty and founded in 1933, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University is the oldest national university in Kazakhstan and one of the country’s leading comprehensive research universities, as well as one of the most influential institutions of higher education in Central Asia.
