Introduction
Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is one of China’s oldest and most well-reputed universities. Founded in 1896 as Nanyang College, it was made a part of the newly founded Chiao Tung University in 1921, and acquired its current name in 1959.
The Museum of SJTU’s History was inaugurated in April 1996 at the Xuhui Campus to celebrate the university’s centennial anniversary, and was remodeled and upgraded in April 2016. In April 2021, just before the university’s 125th anniversary, a new museum covering 2,350 square meters was built inside the Wenbo Building at the Minhang campus. With a theme of “being founded to strengthen the country, growing with reform, and thriving through talent,” the exhibition includes four sections: “The History of SJTU,” “SJTU Today,” “Gathering Place of Talent,” and “The Spirit of SJTU.” There are over 400 models and over 1,200 photos and documents on exhibition, unfolding the changes the university has experienced, its remarkable contributions and tradition.
The museum is a great site for education on patriotism and on the university history, and a place for a dynamic university culture. It serves to cement the bond between SJTU and its alumni across the world and provides an important opportunity for people to learn more about SJTU.
