China Institute for Socio-Legal Studies

The China Institute for Socio-Legal Studies (CISLS) is an interdisciplinary independent research center at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and with links to the KoGuan School of Law.  Besides its main function as an advanced social science research institute, it also performs the additional function of a non-governmental thinktank.

The predecessor of the CISLS, the Law and Society Center (LSC) at the KoGuan School of Law, was established in 2009.  Over the past decade, the Law and Society Center has made significant achievements: establishing the only Chinese Law and Society Association in Shanghai operating under the umbrella of the China Law Society, launching the first English journal in Asia in the domain of law and society – the Asian Journal of Law and Society – in collaboration with Cambridge University Press, publishing several book series on socio-legal studies, hosting three nation-wide annual conferences on social-legal studies in China and organizing several international symposia. Given the expanding range of activities, the LSC at the school level had to transform into an independent research center at the university level, i.e. the CISLS, that is taking the lead in moving socio-legal studies in China to their next milestones.

In 2019, after more than a year of preparation and communication, Shanghai Jiao Tong University approved of the establishment of the CISLS as an independent entity. The new Institute encourages interdisciplinary research on the paradigm of legal innovation through field investigations and empirical analyses on legal issues as well as explorations of new theoretical frontiers and institutional designs. After integrating existing resources from the Law and Society Center and opening up to new research areas, the CISLS acts a central research platform linking various activities, including but not limited to research projects and forums, journal and book series, seminars and workshops as well as annual conferences.

The CISLS’s principal mission is to investigate the deep mysteries of legal order and institutional change in China – against the background of a super-large-scale, network, risk and data-driven society and to propose workable solutions to problems in China and beyond based on empirical studies and cognitive science. The CISLS is committed to establishing a theoretical system of “Science, Social Engineering and Legal Order (SSELO)” through free academic discussion, substantial international collaboration and empirical research, thereby rendering distinctive contributions to law and society research in China and beyond.
