Initiated by Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Education Development Foundation was duly registered in Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau in 2001. The main job of the Foundation is to accept and manage donations from all circles in the society as well as SJTU alumni to promote the development of educational cause of SJTU. Donations towards the Foundation are eligible for pre-tax deductions. In 2012, the Foundation was awarded the prize of Excellent Charity Organization in the second Shanghai Charity Award ceremony. In 2014, the Foundation was rated by Shanghai Municipality as an “AAAAA Social Organization”. The Foundation was legally identified as a charitable organization in 2017.
The Foundation commits to an expansive connection with all circles in the society, broadening channels for fund raising and proactively seeking support from friends and alumni from all circles at home and abroad. The fund of the Foundation is mainly used to support SJTU’s teaching, scientific research, student cultivation and cultural inheritance. Guaranteeing a healthy, orderly and sustainable development, the Foundation constantly optimizes its management professionalism and standardization in various aspects including resource development, program execution and management, service for donors and value preservation and increment of the fund. The Foundation has been continuously growing in its size. In 2014, the Foundation jointly collaborated with SJTU School of Medicine and established a foundation branch. Based on individual needs of different schools and departments in SJTU, the Foundation also sets school-level education development foundations. By the year 2020, the assets of the Foundation have exceeded 1.7 billion yuan.
The Foundation proactively broadens channels for fund raising outside Chinese mainland. In 2008, Shanghai Jiao Tong University Foundation of America (SJTUFA) was duly registered in the State of California, USA and qualifies for US federal tax exemption under Section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code, and is classified as a private foundation under IRC Section 509. In 2014, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (HKSAR) Education Foundation was duly registered in HKSAR and qualifies for tax exemption under Section 88 of the Inland Revenue Ordinance, and is classified as a public charitable institution. These institutions and foundations have all accepted donations from the society after their establishments and have gathered resources for the development of educational cause of SJTU.
