In the heart of Shanghai, Benjamin Thomas James Erger, known affectionately as Ben, is writing a new chapter in his academic journey at the Antai College of Economics and Management, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. As a testament to the growing global appeal of Chinese education, Ben’s story represents a unique bridge between East and West.1736902213103069044.jpg

From Small Town to Global Stage

Growing up in a small town of just 2,000 people in Colorado, Ben’s worldview was meant to be confined by his father’s steadfast belief that life beyond American borders held little promise. However, supported by his mother’s encouragement to “be whoever you want to be,” Ben’s curiosity about the world beyond his hometown prevailed. At 19, he became the first in his family to attend college, embarking on a journey to Columbia University.

Building Bridges Through Language and Culture

During his undergraduate years at Columbia, where he majored in East Asian Studies, Ben’s fascination with Chinese culture began through an unexpected friendship with a Chinese classmate. This connection inspired him to dedicate five years to studying Mandarin Chinese, laying the foundation for his future in China.

A New Academic Direction

Despite facing challenges due to his non-traditional background in economics, Ben found his opportunity at Antai College. “Shanghai Jiao Tong University welcomes students from diverse backgrounds, and I’m truly grateful for that,” Ben shares. His transition from East Asian Studies to business and economics exemplifies Antai’s commitment to interdisciplinary education and inclusive academic environment.

Embracing Life in Shanghai

Now supported by a Chinese government scholarship, Ben has fully immersed himself in Shanghai. He has embraced local cuisine, from Xiaolongbao to Lanzhou noodles, and actively explores the city’s blend of modern and traditional attractions. His adventures have taken him from the bustling streets of Xujiahui to the scenic wonders of Zhangjiajie, with plans to explore more of China’s diverse regions.

Academic Excellence and Time Management

Ben’s approach to learning reflects a mature understanding of education’s value. "While I might not immediately see the application of everything I learn, knowledge always proves useful eventually," he reflects. His strong time management skills and proactive approach to assignments set him apart as a model student at Antai.

Looking Forward

As “He Bo’en” (何柏恩) - his Chinese name symbolizing growth and gratitude - Ben embodies the spirit of international education at Antai College. His advice to future international students? “Come prepared to embrace cultural differences, adapt to local customs, and experience China’s rich diversity in all its forms.”

Ben’s journey from a small Colorado town to Shanghai Jiao Tong University represents more than just an academic pursuit - it’s a story of breaking barriers, embracing change, and building bridges between cultures. At Antai College, he continues to grow, learn, and contribute to the vibrant international community that makes our institution truly global.
