In its government work report, China says it will improve how it runs and manages national laboratories. One member of China's top political advisory body CPPCC, who's also a leading physician, says the efforts are key to achieving self-reliance in science and technology.

DING HONG Deputy Director, Tsung-Dao Lee Institute Shanghai Jiao Tong University "I'm particularly focused on self-reliance and strength in science and technology. Premier Li talked about this in the report a number of times, and he mentioned national laboratories twice. First, when reviewing new breakthroughs in 2023 he mentioned we've made huge headway in establishing a system of national laboratories. Second, when talking about tasks for 2024, he also said we will improve the running of national laboratories. I think this is very important because national laboratories in China are a new thing. This strategic layout is vital for Chinese self-reliance and strength in science and technology. But how we should implement this new thing, well, it's still very challenging. I hope we can provide a complete demonstration and think about the mechanisms behind running the labs."
