The University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI, JI hereafter) signed a strategic partnership agreement with SJTU Press on the occasion of a bilateral textbook development talk held at Long Bin Building on April 19.

In his opening speech, JI Party Secretary Ming Yang welcomed the visit of the SJTU Press delegation led by its Party Secretary Tiandong Qian. He said the international faculty team of JI are very familiar with classic textbooks published overseas, providing a good foundation for them to publish high-quality and influential textbooks in China. The visit of the SJTU Press delegation provides an excellent opportunity to accelerate the textbook development of JI, and establishes a new platform to conduct bilateral cooperation.

Tiandong Qian said the SJTU publishing house hopes to establish a long-term cooperation mechanism with JI in textbook development through this visit, play to its resource advantages and service functions, and fully support, serve, and safeguard the development of JI textbooks.

According to SJTU Press Deputy Party Secretary Peng Zhou, while JI has unique advantages in cutting-edge scientific research and interdisciplinary fields, SJTU Press can provide systematic and customized services for JI faculty members to develop their textbooks. Both parties can plan ahead and try their best in the application of new textbook brands and technologies, in a bid to achieve breakthroughs in the publication of high-quality textbooks and form experience that can be promoted through cooperation.

In his closing remarks, JI Dean Chien-Pin Chen said textbook development has been a key priority for the joint institute, and the signing of the strategic partnership agreement will pave the way for deeper cooperation in broader areas. In the future, the two sides can give full play to their respective advantages, and join hands to create more classic textbooks, especially high-quality English textbooks with demonstrative effects.
