Title: Engaging Students Through Educational Escape Games: A Three-Body Problem Experience
Lecture abstract:
Mr. Delbarre and Dr. Xia will present an educational escape game designed last year for first- and second-year students at SPEIT as part of the Structure of Matter course. This innovative pedagogical tool was developed around the theme of the three-body problem, immersing students in an interactive and problem-solving experience to enhance their understanding of complex physical concepts. The presentation will cover the design process, key challenges, and the impact of the escape game on student engagement and learning outcomes. They will also share insights on how such gamified approaches can be integrated into physics education to foster deeper learning and active participation.
Bio:
David Delbarre was an agrégé professor in preparatory classes in France for 15 years before joining the SJTU Paris Elite Institute of Technology (SPEIT), where he is the coordinator of the Physics and Chemistry Department for the fundamental cycle. Passionate about innovative teaching methods, he specializes in gamification, problem-based learning, and flipped classroom approaches. He also taught Wargaming in the Master’s program in Strategy, Intelligence, and Risk Management (SIGR) at Sciences Po Lille for 4 years and has designed several megagames.
XIA Meng is an associate professor in the Physics and Chemistry team in SPEIT. She teaches structure of matter, physical chemistry, and other courses for undergraduate students. She strives to enhance and innovate curriculum design, fostering students' well-rounded development and innovative abilities. She received second prize in SJTU’s Teaching Innovation Competition in 2023 and nominated for SJTU’s “Excellence Rewards Program” in 2024. Dr. Xia received her Ph.D. from CentraleSupélec, Paris-Saclay, France. Her research interests are in computational fluid dynamics and multiphase flows.
