SJTUers Won Gold Medals in Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games

In the ongoing Tokyo Olympic Games, SJTU students scored good results in a number of competitions with superior strength and willpower.

On July 28th, Chinese athletes Chen Yunxia and Zhang Ling from SJTU, together with their two teammates Lu Yang and Cui Xiaotong, sealed the gold medal in the women’s quadruple sculls final, the tenth gold medal for the Chinese delegation.

They achieved the World Best Time of 6 minutes 5.13 seconds, which was 6 seconds ahead of the second place. It has been 13 years after the Chinese rowing team had won the Olympic championship last time at the Beijing Olympics.

At the 4x200m freestyle swimming relay final on the morning of July 29th, the Chinese team, composed of Yang Junxuan, Tang Muhan, Zhang Yufei, and Li Bingjie, won the championship and broke the world record with 7 minutes 40.33 seconds. This is the first Olympic relay champion for the Chinese swimming team, and also the 14th gold medal for the Chinese delegation.

Li Bingjie, an undergraduate from Antai College of Economics and Management, SJTU, swam the fourth leg and completed the competition perfectly despite the challenge from the other competitors.

Prior to this, on July 26thSJTU student Li Bingjie claimed the bronze medal with 4 minutes 1.08 seconds in the women’s 400m freestyle, breaking the Asian record.

On July 26th, at the table tennis mixed doubles final of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, SJTU alumni Xu Xin and his teammate Liu Shiwen finished the competition second with a silver medal for the Chinese team.

On July 27th, SJTU alumnus Xu Jiayu was ranked the 5th in the men’s 100-meter backstroke final with 52.51 seconds, which is his best record in the season.
