Recently, the results of the 37th Mathematical Contest in Modeling and Interdisciplinary Modeling Competition (MCM/ICM) were announced. The teams from Shanghai Jiao Tong University secured 5 out of the 36 MCM/ICM Outstanding Winners and earned 27 Finalists. Meanwhile, SJTU students won 66 Meritorious Winners and 112 Honorable Mentions in this year’s MCM/ICM, topping the university ranking in the number of Outstanding Winners.

Among the five SJTU teams who won the MCM/ICM Outstanding Winner, one team won the SIAM Award and the COMAP Scholarship Award, and two teams won the INFORMS Award from COMAP. This is the first time that SJTU has won the SIAM Award, which is awarded to no more than 2 teams worldwide every year and is considered as one of the highest awards in mathematical modeling competitions. This year, SJTU has also become the university with the most Outstanding Winners throughout the 37-year history of MCM/ICM.

Mathematical Contest In Modeling (MCM) started in 1985 and Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (ICM) started in 2000, both of which were sponsored by Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications (COMAP). It has received strong support from many organizations such as the Societies for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), the National Security Agency (NSA), and the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). Since it was first held in 1985, there have been 37 sessions of MCM and 23 sessions of ICM, attracting more than 1,000 universities from more than 20 countries around the world.
