SJTU Established Carbon Neutrality Development Research Institute

Responding to the new development concept and national strategy of addressing climate change, on May 22nd, Shanghai Jiao Tong University announced the establishment of Carbon Neutrality Development Research Institute and held Carbon Neutrality and Green Development Forum, as part of the university's endeavor to promote its medium-and-long-term goals and vision of coping with climate change.

The forum gathered experts and scholars from the government, universities, institutions and enterprises in related fields, including Yang Zhenbin, Secretary of the CPC SJTU Committee, President Lin Zhongqin, former President Weng Shilie, former Secretary of the CPC SJTU Committee Ma Dexiu, Deputy President Ding Kuiling, and Vice President Huang Zhen and Xi Lifeng. The opening ceremony was presided by Ding Kuiling.

Lin Zhongqin announced that SJTU Carbon Neutrality Development Research Institute was established, with Academician Du Xiangwan, former vice president of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and director of the Second National Climate Change Expert Committee, and Academician Wen Shilie, former president of SJTU as the honorary presidents, Academician Huang Zhen as the president, and Prof. Zhang Xiaozhong, Geng Yong, Zhao Changying, researcher Lin Qianguo and associate professor Xie Xiaomin as the vice presidents. The inauguration was witnessed by leaders and guests.

Realizing carbon peak and carbon neutrality is a solemn commitment made by China to the international community, requiring a systematic revolution with profound and far-reaching influence. The institute positions itself as a high-end carbon neutrality think tank for the promotion of carbon neutrality technology. At home, the institute will serve as an active player in facilitating the integration of SJTU's advantageous disciplines such as energy, environment, information, management and finance, while internationally it will seek to establish extensive cooperation with government, enterprises and different parties, so as to provide both technical support and decision-making advice for China meeting its carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals.

The inauguration ceremony was followed by a Carbon Neutrality and Green Development Forum. Experts and scholars from related fields gathered for insightful discussions on technology, economy, policy, management and development in the context of carbon neutrality.
