The University of Michigan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute (UM-SJTU JI, JI hereafter) PhD student Huan Liu from the research team of Associate Professor Yaping Dan has won Excellent Poster Award at the 23rd National Semiconductor Physics Conference.

The national semiconductor conference attended by more than 2000 people including over 20 academicians, government officials, leading experts and scholars from universities and scientific research institutions was held in Xi’an, the provincial capital of Shaanxi, from July 8 to July 11. Huan Liu presented her poster entitled “The Photoluminescence Mechanism of Erbium-doped Silicon Processed by Deep-cooling Method” during the conference, which stood out in a competition of 705 posters.

Erbium-doped silicon is one of the important systems to realize silicon-based integrated laser in communication band. Erbium, as a rare earth element, has been widely used in erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA). However, in monocrystalline silicon, its solid solubility is low, which leads to low luminous efficiency. Recently, Professor Dan’s research team has used the non-equilibrium method, ion implantation, to implant erbium atoms into silicon with two orders of magnitude higher than its solid solubility. Then through their special annealing method, Deep Cooling, most of the lattice defects can be repaired and erbium ions can be activated. Compared with the common rapid thermal annealing(RTA) technology, the activation rate has been greatly improved. This method will lay a solid foundation for the subsequent realization of silicon-based integrated electrically-pumped laser, said Liu.

The National Semiconductor Physics Conference sponsored by the Professional Committee of Semiconductor Physics of the Chinese Physical Society is held every two years in odd years in alternation with the biennial International Conference on Semiconductor Physics which is held in even years. Initiated by the late academician Kun Huang, the world-renowned physicist and winner of the “Highest National Science and Technology Award” in 1978, the national conference aims to promote academic exchanges in the field of semiconductor physics, grasp the development trend of major international frontier fields, and enhance the international influence of domestic semiconductor physics and related disciplines of China.
