Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s international journal Science in One Health (SOH) has achieved a major milestone in its development, receiving its first Journal Impact Factor (JIF) of 9.3 in the 2025 edition of the Journal Citation Reports (JCR), released by Clarivate on June 17, 2026.
Published under the supervision of China’s Ministry of Education and hosted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), SOH is an international open-access journal dedicated to advancing research at the intersection of human, animal, and environmental health.
With its inaugural Impact Factor of 9.3, the journal ranks:
• No. 6 among 141 journals in the Infectious Diseases category (Top 5%);
• No. 15 among 443 journals in the Public, Environmental & Occupational Health category (Top 4%).
SOH is ranked in the first quartile (Q1) of both categories, placing it among the top-performing journals in its fields. Among all Web of Science-indexed journals carrying “One Health” in their title, SOH currently ranks first by Impact Factor.
A Rapid Rise in Global Scholarly Publishing
The achievement represents an important milestone for both the journal and Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s efforts to strengthen high-quality international scholarly publishing.
The One Health concept, summarized by the principle “One World, One Health,” recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. It has become an increasingly important framework for addressing global challenges such as emerging infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), food security, and climate-related health risks.
Launched in 2022 through a partnership between Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Elsevier, SOH was established as an international platform for interdisciplinary scholarship and global dialogue in One Health research. Supported by SJTU School of Medicine and related research platforms, the journal focuses on topics including global health governance, infectious disease prevention and control, food safety, tropical diseases, and the integration of human, animal, and environmental health.
Since its launch, SOH has maintained a strong commitment to international standards in editorial quality, academic rigor, and global engagement.

In less than four years, SOH has progressed from a newly launched journal to an internationally recognized publication with growing scholarly influence.
Building an International Platform for One Health Research
The rapid development of SOH reflects Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s long-standing strengths in global health, public health, tropical disease research, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
The journal is led by Editors-in-Chief Prof. Zhou Xiaonong of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Prof. Marcel Tanner, President of the Swiss Academy of Arts and Sciences. Its editorial board includes distinguished scientists, academicians, and experts from international organizations across 32 countries and regions on five continents.
Supported by SJTU’s extensive research infrastructure and international partnerships, SOH has continued to expand its global reach. To date, the journal has received submissions from more than 110 countries and regions and maintains active engagement with international organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), as well as leading research institutions and academic communities worldwide.
Through these efforts, SOH has become an important platform for international academic exchange and collaboration in the One Health field.
Advancing Global Health Through Scholarly Excellence
The journal’s first Impact Factor and dual-category Q1 ranking mark not only a significant achievement but also the beginning of a new stage of development.
As global public health faces increasingly complex challenges—including emerging infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, food safety concerns, climate change, and environmental degradation—effective solutions require interdisciplinary collaboration and coordinated action across sectors and regions.
SOH will continue to serve as a platform for knowledge sharing, scientific dialogue, and international cooperation across the human–animal–environment interface. By publishing high-quality research and fostering global academic exchange, the journal seeks to contribute to evidence-informed policymaking and the advancement of One Health approaches worldwide.
Looking ahead, Shanghai Jiao Tong University will continue to support the journal’s development, strengthen international partnerships, and enhance interdisciplinary collaboration.
