The Speaker, Dr. Pushpito K. Ghosh is the Director of Central Salt & Marine Chemicals Research Institute, Bhavnagar, India.

Following his early schooling in Kolkata, he received the National Science Talent Search scholarship and moved to St. Stephen’s College, Delhi for his undergraduate degree in Chemistry. Thereafter, he obtained his Master’s Degree from IIT Kanpur in 1976 and Ph. D. (under Professor Tom Spiro) in the area of photo-electrochemistry from Princeton University, USA in 1981. He then carried out postdoctoral research in the laboratories of Dr. Norman Sutin (Brookhaven National Lab) and Dr. Allen Bard (University of Texas at Austin) and made valuable contributions in the area of water splitting besides inventing the clay modified electrode.

He worked in ICI from 1985-1998 including as Manager of Strategic Research in UK and as Head of the Alchemie Research Centre in Thane, and made important contributions towards pure and applied research. As Director of CSMCRI since 1999, he made the laboratory vibrant and was instrumental in the development of many new concepts such as biodiesel from wasteland, potash-magnesia integrated technology, round salt and green bromine. Dr. Ghosh has a number of papers to his credit besides 28 granted U.S. patents from the inventions at CSMCRI.

He is the Chairman of the Chemical Division Council of Bureau of Indian Standards and also of the Inorganic Chemistry and Water-related Programme Advisory Committees of Department of Science & Technology, Government of India. He is also a member of the Green Chemistry Task Force, the Research Appraisal Committee under the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, and the Board of Governors of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. Dr. Ghosh has lectured widely and been bestowed with a number of awards. He is a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences.
