School of Mechanical Engineering

The history of the School of Mechanical Engineering (ME), Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) dates back to 1913. The School has the vision of a world-class engineering school committed to high-level education and cutting edge research. It aims to offer the best learning experience to its students, the most rewarding working environment for its faculty and staff as well as the most effective service to industry and society. Among the 334 faculty members, 124 are professors, 152 are associate professors and 58 are assistant professors, and more than 5000 students are learning here. As one of the top Schools of Mechanical Engineering in China, it strives to increase its international competitiveness and global presence through quality teaching, advanced research and close collaboration with leading universities in the world. The alumni from the School, as scientists, engineers, educators, statesmen and entrepreneurs, always make outstanding contributions to the innovation of science and technology, and the development of the society.

  • Department of Industrial Engineering and Management

    The Department of Industrial Engineering and Management was firstly established in 1930s and rebuilt in 1997. There are 20 faculty members, including 1 Chang Jiang Scholar Program Chair Professor of MOE, and 1 National Thousand Talents Program Chair Professor, 1 IISE Fellow and 1 IEEE Fellow, in the department. The department has an undergraduate program, an MSc program, and a doctoral program of IE, and three master of engineering programs in IE, logistic engineering, and project management, and a master program in engineering management. The department has 1 national teaching team, and 4 national-level quality courses. The department focuses on theoretical and applied researches in production and manufacturing system, quality engineering and management, logistics and supply chain, service engineering and management; and production engineering. The Department has finished or is undertaking more 60 National Fund Projects including NSFC Key Projects, 863 Hi-Tech Projects, NSFC Projects, and many industry funded projects. Annual research funds amounts up to 2 million US$ .

  • Institute of Automotive Engineering

    The Institute of Automotive Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University was founded in 2006. It has become a world-class automotive research institute which is supported by the National Engineering Laboratory for Automotive Electronic Control Technology. The institute provides a unique platform for automotive engineering research at SJTU with strong financial support from both government agencies and industrial partners. It has also been participated in various international academic activities. There are currently more than 20 full-time faculty members, researchers, and administrative staff members and 100 graduate students in the institute.

  • Institute of Biomedical Manufacturing and Life Quality Engineering

    The Institute of Biomedical Manufacturing and Life Quality Engineering was founded in 1985. There are 3 professors, 5 associate professors, 3 assistant professors and 2 engineers in the institute. It belongs to the State Key Laboratory of Mechanical System and Vibration. It focuses on the research of smart system and biomedical engineering. In the last twenty years, through cooperating with several hospitals, it developed many creative researches on medical robotic technology, digital medical technology, biomechanics, biomedical manufacturing, biomaterials and artificial organs, and won the first prize of Wu Wenjun Artificial Intelligence Science and Technology Award, the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, and the second prize of Shanghai science and technology progress award.

  • Institute of Design and Control Engineering for Heavy Equipment

    Institute of Design and Control Engineering for Heavy Equipment was founded in April 2007 in order to focus on the design and theoretical research of parallel kinematic robots with application in legged walking machines and high payload mechanical/mechatronic equipments of large size, such as large manipulators and equipments for forging operation and nuclear power plants. The institute has completed tens of research projects from the State Key Fundamental Research Programs, State Science and Technology Support Program, National Natural Science Foundation (NSFC), National High-Tech Research and Development Program, as well as the industries. The research performed in the institute, especially type synthesis of parallel mechanisms, is holding a leading position in China, and the institute is the headquarter of the China Mechanisms Committee of Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society (CMES). There are currently 6 professors, 6 associate professors, and 4 assistant professors in the institute.

  • Institute of Electromechanical Design and Knowledge Engineering

    Institute of Electromechanical Design and Knowledge Engineering mainly engages in mechanical design and manufacturing, computational material science, machine learning & innovation design and interdisciplinary subject. There are 4 professors and 3 associate professors in the Institute. The institute has undertaken more than 60 projects including national 973 program projects and national major scientific instrument and equipment development projects. More than 400 papers have been published in international journals. The institute has received National Science and Technology Progress Awards in 2014. Research results have been successfully applied in many industries such as motor, air-conditioning, electromechanical equipment, precision optical instruments and intelligent robots.

  • Institute of Engineering Thermophysics

    The Institute of Engineering Thermophysics (IET) at Shanghai Jiao Tong University was founded in 1950. There are currently 25 faculty members at IET, including an academician of Chinese Academy of Science, 12 professors, 10 associate professors. IET faculty are actively engaged in a wide range of research activities related to fields of thermal management, energy conversion and storage, propulsion and micro-/nano-technology. The researches in IET are heavily supported by major national funding agencies, and sponsored by renowned enterprises. IET is one of the top research centers for thermal fluids and heat transfer in China.

  • Institute of Fuel Cells

    The Institute of Fuel Cells was founded in 1998, which was the first academic institution focusing on fuel cell research in colleges of China. Recently, the institute has made great achievements in the field of electrochemical energy conversion and storage. The research topics include the fundamentals, materials, methods and applications of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC), direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC), lithium ion batteries (LIB), lithium-air batteries (LAB), vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB)and so on. There are currently 3 professors, 6 associate professors, 4 assistant professors, 5 post-doctors and over 40 graduate students in the institute.

  • Institute of Intelligent Manufacturing and Information Engineering

    The Institute of Intelligent Manufacturing and Information Engineering (previously known as the Institute of Computer Integrated Manufacturing) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, founded in 1989, is the national first-class discipline in Mechanical Engineering and Automation, which has accomplished over 30 national projects and won over 10 national/regional prizes for its significant achievements in promoting the manufacturing technologies of China. Meeting the demand of the country for Intelligent Manufacturing, the institute is focusing on the research areas including Intelligent Manufacturing System, Precise Measurement and Online Measurement, VR and AR, Simulation and Parallel Computing for Complex Systems, Big Data Management and Analysis, and Metal Additive Manufacturing System. There are 5 professors, 3 associate professors, 6 assistant professors and 2 engineers in the institute.

  • Institute of Mechatronics and Logistic Equipment

    The Institute of Mechatronics and Logistic Equipment (previously known as "Institute of Mechatronics") is one of the first institutions studying hydraulic/pneumatic power transmission and hoisting/constructions in China. The research focuses on the following areas: Fluid transmission and control, Intelligent agricultural equipment & agricultural robotics, Logistics equipment & automation, and Remote monitoring & intelligent maintenance. In the last few years, the institute has finished scores of projects funded by Chinese government and well-known industrial companies. Professor LIU Chengliang, leading this institute as the first awardee, received the National Science and Technology Progress Award - Grade II twice (2009, 2011). 3 professors, 11 associate professors, and 2 assistant professors compose the research team.

  • Institute of Refrigeration and Cryogenics

    Institute of Refrigeration and Cryogenics (IRC) was founded in 1956 and recognized as the earliest one recruiting undergraduate students in the major of refrigeration and cryogenics in China. IRC started the master degree program in the first batch in 1981 approved by the State Council, and then doctoral degree program in 1986. 14 professors, 8 associate professors, 1 lecturer, 1asistant professor, and 1 senior engineer are serving in IRC. The director Prof. WANG Ruzhu is now Chair professor of SJTU, he was granted the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, the Cheung Kong Scholars Distinguished Professor from the Ministry of Education, and the innovative research team leader of NSFC. He was also the winner of the J & E Hall Gold Medal in 2013, Highly cited researcher in 2017. Two faculties were awarded the NSFC for Excellent Young Scholars. Currently, the institute has more than 200 graduate students for master and doctor degrees. IRC has accomplished many research projects assigned by the government, such as State Key Technology Project, NSFC Project, National Defense Project, and other projects from municipal government and industries. The total amount of funding approaches 50 million RMB each year. The main research directions include Refrigeration, HVAC, Cryogenics, and Renewable energy. IRC has been awarded 3 National Research Awards and 1 National Education Award in the last 10 years.

  • Institute of Thermal Energy Engineering

    The Institute of Thermal Energy Engineering is concerned with the education and fundamental and application research relevant to thermal energy conversion and environment protection for power plants and energy systems. The discipline is rooted in thermodynamics, combustion theory, transport phenomena and fuel chemistry. Active research thrusts include ultra supercritical power generation technology, pulverized coal combustion and gasification, CFB combustion, oil shale combustion and retorting technologies, solid wastes and biomass thermochemical conversion and energy utilization, pollutants formation and emission control, carbon dioxide capture and storage, new energy system and energy saving. It has an innovative faculty team of 6 full professors, 7 associate professors and 1 assistant professor.

  • Institute of Turbomachinery

    This institute was founded in 1952, and has been the main part of Key Lab of Ministry of Education for Power Machinery and Engineering, and Gas Turbine Research Institute in Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Currently, it has a total of 21 faculty members, including 2 Academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering and 7 full professors. The research efforts are mainly related to gas turbines, steam turbines, and compressors. The research strengths of faculties are advanced thermal cycle and system performance simulation, low-emission combustion, blade cooling, structure integrity, flow-structure-acoustics interaction and advanced measurement techniques for flow, heat transfer and combustion dynamics.

  • Institute of Vibration, Shock and Noise

    The Institute of Vibration, Shock and Noise (IVSN) at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) was founded in 1978. The IVSN is one of the earliest Chinese academic units occupying key national disciplines and providing doctoral programs. Currently, the IVSN encompasses 26 faculty members including 14 professors, 6 associate professors, and three chief engineers in charge of the ISVN labs. The labs are equipped with many experimental facilities including a 50 kN electromagnetic shaker with climatic environment cabinet, a 50kN hydraulic shaker and a vertical drop shocker, three anechoic chambers, etc. The IVSN is an interdisciplinary department for providing high quality and open education to students, preparing them to make substantial contributions to the fields of vibration, shock and noise. Areas of research at the IVSN include: vibration analysis and control, shock analysis and protection, acoustical noise, inverse problems in vibration and acoustics, machinery health monitoring and fault diagnosis, M/NEMS dynamics, and smart materials, structures and systems, etc. More than 20 PhD students and 40 Msc students graduate from the IVSN every year.

  • Institute of Manufacturing Technology and Equipment Automation

    The Institute of Manufacturing Technology and Equipment Automation in Shanghai Jiao Tong University was founded in 1952. It belongs to the state key subject "Mechanical Engineering", which was first accredited by the ministry of education to enroll post-graduate students and post-doctor fellows. 6 professors, 15 associate professors and 4 lectures compose the research team. Main research topics in this institute include High efficiency & precision machining, Advanced manufacturing & coatings technology, Laser Processing and EDM, Metrology and Micro-machining. This institute has built up broad cooperation with many internationally famous companies, including Shanghai Electric, Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, Zimmer & Kreim GmbH, and Makino Asia, etc.

  • Robotics Institute

    The Robotics Institute (RI) was established in 1979 to conduct fundamental and applied robotics research. Now the Robotics Institute is among the top three institutions for robotics research in China, with numerous world-class lab equipment and facilities occupying 3,000 square meters on SJTU campus and 5,000 square meters in the Lingang Institute of Intelligent Manufacturing. Benefitting from the diversified expertise of the faculty members in RI, robotics researches on fundamentals as well as applications are actively carried out, spanning a wide range of topics such as kinematics, dynamics and control, bio-mechatronics, intelligent prostheses, industrial robotic systems, field robots, service robots, ubiquitous robotic presence, surgical robots, rehabilitation robots, assistive robots, and soft robots. There are 11 professors, 16 associate professors, 2 assistant professors and 1 principal engineer in RI.

  • School of Nuclear Science and Engineering

    Established in 1958, the Nuclear Engineering Department of Shanghai Jiao Tong University is one of the most well-known nuclear engineering departments in China. The basic disciplines for student education and training contain the fields such as nuclear power plant systems, nuclear thermal-hydraulics, reactor physics, nuclear safety, radiation protection, nuclear power system control and operation and nuclear material. The education and training activities are mainly oriented to the needs of nuclear power related organizations concerning design, construction, operation and research of nuclear power plant systems. The School of Nuclear Science and Engineering (SNSE) was established in 2006, including three research fields on Reactor Engineering, Nuclear Material & Fuel, and Radiation Protection & Nuclear Technology Application. 7 professors, 10 associate professors and 10 lectures compose the research team.

  • Shanghai Key Laboratory of Digital Manufacture for Thin-walled Structures

    Shanghai Key Laboratory of Digital Manufacture for Thin-walled Structures was established in 2004, originating from Autobody Design and Manufacturing Technology Center co-founded by Academician LIN Zhong-Qin and Prof. CHEN Guan-Long in 1996. There are 30 full-time members, including 9 professors, 9 associate professors, 3 senior engineers and 2 assistant professors serving in the laboratory. The lab is dedicated to applied research on manufacturing processes and quality control of thin-walled structures, and has made significant contributions to the development of national manufacturing industry such as automotive, aircraft, heavy-lift launch vehicle and high-speed train, in terms of forming, welding, assembly and lightweight design etc. The lab has been highly recognized by both industry and academia, has strong relationships with GM R&D, FORD, BAOWU, SGMW and CASC, has gained four national level and eleven ministerial level science and technology progress awards.

  • The Institute of Internal Combustion Engine

    The Institute of Internal Combustion Engine (IICE) was founded in 1954. It is one division of the MOE key lab of Power Machinery and Engineering. IICE is dedicated to advanced engine combustion technologies, alternative-fuel IC engine, aftertreatment technologies for IC engine, etc. The faculty in the institute includes 8 professors, 11 associate professors and 7 lecturers, and some of the faculty members are top scholars in the world in the area of combustion kinetics, engine combustion, turbocharging and aftertreatment technology. IICE has developed the first dimethyl ether (DME) city bus and the first liquid natural gas vehicle of China, and so far has won 3 national awards for outstanding research works on advanced engine combustion technologies, such as HCCI, turbocharging, DME engine and fuel design.
