Zhang Xu

Communication Engineering



Professor Zhang Xu, an expert in Information and Communication engineering, was born Wuxi, Jiangsu Province in Nov. 1913. He graduated from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1934 and in 1940 he attained the degree of doctor of science from Harvard. He is now a professor in the School of Electronic and Electric Engineering of SJTU as a PhD supervisor. In 1980, Professor Zhang Xu was elected a member of Chinese Academy of Sciences (member of the Academic Divisions). In his early years, Professor Zhang is one of the well-known professors who have actively participated in the construction of our country's communication system, and who have contributed as the leaders and advocators of constructing communication system in our country at the historical turning point.

Since the early 1950s, he has conducted many new courses, such as, Remote Communication in 1952, Transistor Circuit in 1962, Data Transfer in 1967 and Optical Fiber Communication Principle in 1980. Besides, he has successively published widely-used textbooks and reference books including Radio Engineering, Multichannel Carrier Telephony, Transistor Circuit Analysis, Data Communication, Optical Fiber Communication Technology, Modern Communication Technology & University Education and Information Superhighway.
