Polymer Chemistry, Polymer Materials



Professor Xu Xi, born in 1921 in Nanjing, Jiangsu, is one of the pioneers and founders of Chinese polymer materials science and engineering discipline. In 1944, graduated from the school of Chemical engineering, Zhejiang University in 1944, he got a master degree from Caspian Sea University in 1948. In 1991, he was elected to be the member of Chinese academy of sciences. Now he is the director of Polymer Research Institute of Sichuan University and Polymer Research Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He is also the editor in chief of publications, the journal of Polymeric Materials Science and Engineering and Oilfield Chemicals. He has won 20 national, provincial and ministerial Science and Technology Awards, such as the National Prize for Natural Sciences and the national innovation prize. He has won the national outstanding teaching achievement awards of high-level qualified personnel's training of polymer science, and named as the Bringing up Talents (Yucai Award) of polymer science. He has got He Liang He Li Fund Progress Prize in Science and Technology, and Hou De Bang chemical scientific achievement award. He has been awarded the national education system model, the advanced technology worker in college, advanced individual of key state laboratories and advanced individual of national defense plans cooperation, etc. He has long been engaged in research on the theory of forming for polymer material, High Polymer Chemistry, radiation chemistry, etc. He has published more than 300 pieces of paper and 4 monographs and translations and been awarded 26 national invention patents. He exerts great efforts in the research of Ultrasonic degradation and composite of polymer, intermacro-molecular complex through hydrogen bonding, the compatibility of blending polymer composite and enjoys a lot of achievements. Using ultrasonic wave, vibration grinding and airflow pulverization, he got some polymer materials with great application prospect, which is difficult to yield through general method. He has invented a millstone shape force chemical reactors, and has proposed a theory that intermacro-molecular complex through hydrogen bonding could reduce the crystallinity of the conducting materials and increase the conductivity. The theory is significant for promoting the research of quick ion conductor. He has restrained the polyolefin materials’ crosslinking reaction in the process of electron beam, gamma rays and UV and microwave radiation and introduced some oxygen-containing groups on molecular chain of polyolefin, which improved the compatibility of polyolefin/engineering plastic and polyolefin/inorganic material systems and yielded high toughness of polyolefin blend materials. His research has provided a new way to improve the compatibility of multi-component polymer system.
