Brief Introduction

Shanghai Key Laboratory of Stomatology was founded in 2006, and has become one of the most famous bases and clinical research institutes of stomatology in China. The Lab consists of six sub-units, namely, Lab of Oral Tumor Biology, Lab of Oral Bioengineering/Regenerative Medicine, Lab of Oral Microbiology, Lab of Prosthodontics, Shanghai Biomaterial Research & Test Center and Lab of Oral Pathology. To date, there are 39 staffs (among them, 30 professors or associate professors) working in the key lab. Since its establishment, a lot of research achievements have been acquired. Sixty state research projects have been carrying out in this lab since 2006. One hundred and ninety-eight papers cited by SCI and supported by Shanghai Key Laboratory of Stomatology have been published. Twelve provincial and national prizes have been awarded to the researchers of the lab. Ninety eight graduate students have been graduated from the lab. Up to now, the lab has established sister-relationship with twelve academic institutes around the world. A lot of famous experts are awarded honorary professors or guest professors of our lab. Professor Mao Li was awarded Cheung Kong Chair Professor in 2008.

    Professor Jiang Xingquan is the director of the lab of Oral Bioengineering/Regenerative Medicine.

    Professor Zhang Fuqiang, Chairman of Society of Prosthodontics, Chinese Stomatological Association, is the director of the lab of Prosthodontics.

    Professor Sun Jiao, Former Chairman of Chinese Society of Dental Materials, Chinese Stomatological Association, is the director of the Shanghai Biomaterial Research & Test Center.

    Professor Li Jiang, Vice Chairman of Chinese Society of Oral Pathology, Chinese Stomatological Association, is the director of the lab of Oral Pathology.

  • Research Achievements

  • Study of relationship between human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and carcinogenesis in oral lesions
  • There is a causal association between human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and carcinogenesis in oral lesions. PCR detection confirmed the presence of HPV16/18 DNA in oral malignancies, thereby indicating that high-risk HPVs (especially HPV16) account for the development of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Through transfixing HPV16 E6/E7 in vitro, immortalized human oral epithelial cells, named HIOEC, was firstly established in China. Further, culturing with carcinogen, HIOEC was transformed into malignant cells. The whole process simulated the multi-steps development of OSCC. In this model, some differential genes and proteins were found after genomic and proteomic analysis. It provides the basis for further investigation on carcinogenesis and tumor marker of OSCC. This study was awarded First Prize of Scientific and Technological Progress granted by National Ministry of Education in 2005.

  • Research on and application of bone regeneration in oral and maxillofacial region by tissue engineering techniques
  • The group carried out series of researches to deal with bone regeneration problems in oral and maxillofacial region, such as the critical sized mandibular segmental defects, horizontal alveolar bone absorption by using tissue engineering techniques. Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) or Nell-1 gene-modified seed cells were also used to further improve the quality and quantity of tissue-engineered bone. 42 research papers have been published, covering a variety of decent international journals on oral and maxillofacial surgery, tissue engineering, gene therapy and bone research field. One national invention patent was awarded, and the research has won the IADR/Hatton Award in 2005 and the First Prize of Science and Technology Progress award of Shanghai in 2007.

  • Root canal anatomy of Chinese permanent teeth and the relationship between the quality control and outcome analysis of the endodontic therapy
  • Periapical periodontitis is the inflammation of the tissue adjacent to the tip of the tooth's root. Bacteria are known as the cause and if left unidentified and untreated, the patient will lose teeth. The knowledge of root canal anatomy is the base of successful root canal therapy. This study was performed to determine the anatomy structure of Chinese permanent teeth root canals. The examination of root canal systems of the teeth was based on Vertucci's classification. The findings were used to classify the teeth into four groups. Variable root canal configurations were found. This study will be of use to the pre-evaluation of the difficulties of endodontic treatment, hence the quality control. This study was awarded First Prize of Science & Technology Progress by the Ministry of Education in 2009.
