Brief Introduction

Shanghai Key Lab of Embryo & Reproductive Engineering was founded in 1993 by Shanghai Municipal Committee of Science and Technology. It focuses on the R&D and application of embryo engineering techniques and the generation of the transgenic animals-bioreactors. In the past seventeen years, the Lab has made great progress and borne rich fruits. In collaboration with Beijing Agriculture College, the key lab molecularly cloned the DNA sequence of bovine SRY gene for the first time in the world, and proposed and succeeded in controlling the sexes of cattle, goats and other economic animals by means of identifying SRY gene of the embryos. Nowadays, a batch of transgenic cloned cows has been generated. The transgenic goats secreting biologically active human clotting factor IX in the milk as well as cow carrying human serum albumin gene were appraised as the top ten great scientific achievements in China in the years of 1998 and 1999 by the Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Recently, the key lab is coupled with Shanghai Tao-Tao Co. Ltd to set up a modern large animal facility in Songjiang, Shanghai. The ovum pick-up (OPU) from living cows, combined with somatic cell nuclear transfer (cloning) have been developed to effectively multiply bulls of superior breeding and cows with high milk production, accelerating the improvement of diary breeds and contributing to dairy development in China.

    Research Fields

  • To develop and launch new technical platforms for transgenic animals and mammary bioreactors;
  • To develop and launch research on the application of techniques of vitro production in rapid breeding of fine cows;
  • To identify the genetic characters of embryos and to intervene the embryo at early stages;
  • To develop new techniques for genetic diagnosis and gene therapy for inherited disorders.

  • Research Achievements

  • A batch of transgenic cows was generated based on somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) method.
  • The transgenic goats secreting biologically active human clotting factor IX in the milk as well as the cow carrying human serum albumin gene were produced, which were assessed into the top ten great scientific achievements in China in the years of 1998 and 1999.
