Combination of Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine in Prevention and Therapy of Osteoarthropathy

Brief Introduction

Shanghai Key Laboratory of Combination of Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine in Prevention and Therapy of Osteoarthropathy is affiliated with Shanghai Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedics. It has more than 30 professionals and staff researchers. The study areas include metabolic bone disease, bone tumor, skeletal development, metabolism, regeneration, bone and joint repair and reconstruction, induction and differentiation of cells in bone, movement function and biomechanical test surrounding the bone and joint disease. Lab has cell culture rooms, (isolated and have maintained air purity 10000 class), cellular and molecular biology and micro array, transgenic animal rooms and animal surgery rooms, hard tissue image processing, movement function testing, osseous tissue bank, national clinical drug test institute in traumatology and orthopaedics, etc. There are many major instruments including hard tissue slicing machine, x-ray and molecular imaging for small animals, Micro-CT, biomechanics, movement function, and gene analysis. The total lab assets are more than 15 million.

    Dr. Deng Lianfu (M.D. Ph.D.) born in March 1962, Professor, PhD supervisor

    He graduated from Shanghai Second Medical University in June 1996, and got Doctor's degree in orthopaedic surgery. He was given an accelerated promotion to associate professor during his degree study. He worked in the post-doctoral stations of Shanghai Second Medical University from July 1996 to December 1998, and was given an accelerated promotion again to professor. He worked in Shanghai Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic, Shanghai Ruijin Hospital from January 1999 and as an exchange scholar worked in the University of Cincinnati and the University of Alabama at Birmingham from 2003 to 2005.

    Mainly focused on the common and multiple osteoarthrosis such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis etcetera and bone tumor, and based on the study of their development and regulation mechanisms, we propose the prevention and cure strategy.

    Main emphasis is put on the study of bone and joint repair progression and cellular and molecular biology involved, using biomaterials and tissue engineering to repair and to reconstruct the bone /joint structure and function.

  • Induction and differentiation of cells in bone

    Main emphasis is put on mechanisms and key regulation pathway of the mesenchymal stem cell oriental differentiation, to select and find related inducing factors and evaluate their role as drugs.

    To investigate the kinematics and dynamics of bone and joint depending on in vitro material mechanical experiment and in vivo Motor function test, while using the method of computer simulation analysis to test the mechanical properties of the biomaterials for tissue engineering.

    The related achievements have been awarded the Third prize of Shanghai Scientific and Technological Progress Award (1997 and 2004), the First prize of Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Award (2005), and the Second prize of Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award (2005)

  • The pathological mechanism and related preventing and treating strategies of osteoarthritis
  •       The degeneration of articular chondrocytes was the key step of OA.
  •       Define two intervention phases delaying the progress of OA.
  •       Screen and establish sensitive and specific biochemical method of diagnosis and monitoring.;
  • The change of osteoblast features was the central step of OA through the analysis of prosthesis loosening after total articular replacement, and osteoinducible prosthesis with preparing metal-base coat of nanometer scale.

    The related achievements have won the Second prize of Shanghai Scientific and Technological Progress Award (1994), the Second prize of Scientific and Technological Progress Award by the Ministry of Education (1995 and 1997), the Second prize of Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Award (2006), and the Third prize of Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award (2006)

  • The cellular and biological features of osteoporosis and its prevention and treatment
  •       The osteoblasts of osteoporosis were like fibroblasts.
  •       The conversion rate of osteoclasts and bone reabsorption activity accelerated.
  •       The feature of osteoporosis was dysplasia of bone loss and calcification, the defect of osteogenesis and osteoreabsorption coupling. 
  •       Synthetic small molecular compound (SF) had bone-affinity.
  • The combination of SF and Estradiol(ES)resulted in low dosage of drug, low side effects, and high efficiency.

    The related achievements have won Shanghai Scientific and Technological Award (1995), the Third prize of Shanghai Scientific and Technological Progress Award (1999), and two National invention patents.


    Domestic and international cooperation

  • Bone research center with Hong Kong University was founded in 2002. Currently it jointly trains one Ph.D. candidate, and undertakes a non-governmental cooperation program (2010) founded by Shanghai Science and Technology Commission-"The role and mechanism of Biomaterials promoting osteogenesis during the crucial step of bone repair (10410702000)".
  • The cooperation with Dr. Clemens at Hopkins University was setup in 2004. Jointly train one Ph.D. candidates with one master graduate and two PhD graduates.
  • The cooperation with Dr. Li Yiping at Harvard University was setup in 2007. Jointly train one Ph.D. candidates with three master graduates and two Ph.D. graduates. Assume one project founded by Youth Science Funds of Chinese National Natural Science Foundation-"The role of ATP6v1c1 in osteoclast-related disease (30901525)."
  • The cooperation with Dr. Li Zongming at Cleveland State University was setup in 2008. Jointly train one Ph.D. candidates with one Ph.D. graduate.
  • The cooperation with Dr. Shi Riyi at Purdue University was setup in 2009. Now we undertake a non-governmental cooperation program (2009) founded by Shanghai Science and Technology Commission-"The role of PEG in nerve axon membrane repair after spinal cord compression injury in goat (09410706000)".
