Vice-Chancellor of Cambridge University Was Appointed SJTU Professor Emeritus

On the afternoon of April 9, Lecture Hall of Chen Ruiqiu Building on Minhang Campus was packed out with students. They responded with prolonged applause when Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, Vice-Chancellor of Cambridge University, stepped into the lecture hall, with the company of Academician Zhang Jie, President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Professor Xu Fei and Professor Zhang Wenjun, SJTU vice presidents.

In the warm atmosphere, the ceremony to grant Vice-Chancellor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz SJTU Professor Emeritus was grandly held. On behalf of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, President Zhang Jie issued the letter of appointment to Vice-Chancellor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz and presented him SJTU badge.

 

Afterwards, Vice-Chancellor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz delivered a speech titled "The Spirit of Cambridge". He began with such questions as "For what do we educate students", "Are all the universities the same" and "Are we partners or competitors", etc to share development progress and educational characteristics of Cambridge University with SJTU students. He also talked about the Cambridge Talent Training Model, namely characteristics of Cambridge students, the uniqueness of Cambridge, Cambridge's education strategies, and the future of globalization, etc.

 

 

In the conclusion, Vice-Chancellor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz quoted the poem "Saying Goodbye to Cambridge Again" by Chinese famous poet Xu Zhimo who had studied at Cambridge University before. His excellent report and personal charisma won warm applause from SJTU students.

After the report, Sir Leszek Borysiewicz conducted wonderful on-site interaction with students and answered their questions concerning personal development, university study, life at Cambridge University, and scientific research, etc.
