The opening ceremony for SJTU Sino-Italian Green Energy Laboratory (GEL) was held on Minhang Campus on May 19, 2012.
Corrado Clini, Minister of Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea, Vincenzo De Luca, Consul-General of Consulate General of the Republic of Italy in Shanghai, SJTU Chairperson Ma Dexiu, Vice-President Wu Dan, Secretary of the Party Committee of School of Mechanical Engineering (ME) Tao Yanmin, Executive Dean of ME Xi Lifeng, Director of Institute of Refrigeration and Cryogenics Wang Ruzhu and over 30 representatives from the corporate both at home and abroad which participated in the GEL construction were present at the ceremony.
Prof. Wang Ruzhu, Chief of the Project Team, briefed the ratification and construction of GEL. Chairperson Ma Dexiu expressed her gratitude to the support from the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea, and placed high hopes on GEL in helping to promote Sino-Italian exchange and to develop green energy technology. Minister Clini said that Sino-Italian GEL was another milestone for the city construction and its sustainable development in the Sino-Italian Cooperation Program for Environmental Protection.
On November 3, 2007, SJTU and Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea signed the cooperation agreement. Sponsored by both Italian government and SJTU, Sino-Italian Building was equipped with advanced technologies in the fields of environment and energy as well as relevant equipments provided by both countries. A team led by Wang Ruzhu, Director of Institute of Refrigeration and Cryogenics, undertook the low-carbon technology research for the inner construction of the building.
According to Chief Wang Ruzhu, over 20 green energy technologies applied in the Building are feasible technologies and nearly half of them are developed independently by SJTU. The building will become a research, testing and demonstration platform for new energy and energy-saving technology in construction and it also will become a platform for international cooperation and exchange.
On the occasion of its completion, the Sino-Italian GEL Building passed the golden authentication of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) issued by U.S. Green Building Council, according to the official bulletin from the U.S. Green Building Council (Shanghai institute), which makes it the very first building with the gold medal of LEED among all the Chinese colleges and universities.
Minister Clini said that Italian government would make a suggestion to PRC Ministry of Science and Technology that the Sino-Italian Green Energy Building should become a platform for future Sino-Italian technology and education exchange.
