July 11, 2011      Author: Du Xin

On July 8, the founding ceremony of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Chiba University International Cooperative Research Center was held on Minhang Campus. President Zhang Jie and President Yasushi Saito of Chiba University inked the cooperation agreement and unveiled the research center together. The delegation members and other leaders, experts and scholars concerned attended the ceremony.

President Zhang Jie said in his speech that the founding of the research center created a new cooperation model between the two universities. The Center is co-invested by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Chiba University, and is expected to have expanded research fields with the joint efforts, complementary advantages and resource sharing of the two universities. So it can achieve excellent results in scientific research, talent training, and achievement promotion and speed up the progress to aim for a world-class university with greater contributions to the society. Shanghai Jiao Tong University will certainly give strong support to the cooperation project. He also hoped that the founding of the center would serve as a new start for the two universities to promote friendship and hold on together.

Chiba University is a prestigious university with a long history in Japan. SJTU and Chiba share a strong educational tradition, a pioneering development course and the friendly cooperation. Back to October 2002, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Chiba University signed an inter-university academic exchange and cooperation agreement with the cooperation field extended from electronic information to other areas. In March 2007, shortly after President Zhang Jie assumed office, a new round of the inter-university agreement was signed with former President Kozai Toyoki of Chiba University, in which the cooperation scope and depth expanded from electronic information to mechanical engineering, agronomy, design and other disciplines while the exchange student and joint master training programs were implemented.

The newly established "Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Chiba University International Cooperative Research Center" will initially involve the fields of bio-mechanics, biomimetic robotics, and biomedical research. According to the agreement, the project of the center will be gradually expanded to more areas.
