SHANGHAI universities are filling the summer break with high-quality courses, lectures and overseas exchange programs to help students meet global challenges.
For the first time this year, Shanghai Jiao Tong University has added a summer session. Compared with the spring and autumn semesters, the summer semester lasts only four weeks but it includes intensive courses, varied activities, internships and overseas studies.
"The new three-semester system is an international practice adopted by many world-class universities," said Huang Zhen, vice president of the university. "The new system will help the university invite top scholars to give lectures and courses."
More than 80 overseas professors will lecture this summer at Jiao Tong University.
In the past, differences in semester dates made it difficult for overseas academics to accept invitations, Huang said.
"Many scholars are willing to lecture here for a short time without disrupting their own research, but we had only two long semesters in the past."
The new summer session will make it easier for students and teachers to attend short-term overseas studies without missing classes.
More than 17,000 Jiao Tong University students will attend more than 300 classes this summer.
