Ye Jun was born in Shanghai in November, 1967. He received his bachelor's degree in applied physics from SJTU in 1989 and his master's degree in physics from the University of New Mexico in 1991. In 1997, he obtained his PhD in physics from the University of Colorado under the instruction of John L. Hall. Ye is a fellow of JILA and the National Institute of Standards and Technology and a professor in Department of Physics at the University of Colorado.

Ye Jun always holds his alma mater close to his heart and says that his solid foundation in physics was acquired at SJTU. He talked with SJTU students about science and life when he returned on December 21, 2005. He guested at the Inspiration Forum in 2007 and gave students a word of encouragement: the Nobel Prize is a driving force for life but never a goal. In 2008, Ye participated in the "Face-to-Face activity with Distinguished Alumni" and gave a high-level academic report on the occasion of the Physics Department's 80th anniversary.
