February 27, 2019      Author: Qin Ye

On February 27, QS released the 2019 World University Ranking by subject in the ninth consecutive year, which covers a total of 1222 universities, five broad subject areas, and 48 disciplines. The ranking is based on the academic reputation of the university, employer's reputation, research citations per paper, and H- index. These four components are combined to produce the results for each of the subject rankings, with weightings adapted for each discipline.

For Shanghai Jiao Tong University, 27 disciplines are on the list, compared to 25 last year, and the 2 newly listed disciplines are Anatomy and Physiology (ranked from 51st to 100th) and Social Policy and Administration (ranked from 51st to 100th). There are still 10 disciplines ranking top 50, and 15 ranked from 51st to 100th, compared with 8 last year. SJTU's disciplines have witnessed prominent improvement, with 25 top 100 disciplines, compared with 18 last year.

It can be seen from the changes of the rankings that 15 disciplines of SJTU have risen compared with the previous year, two disciplines among which, mathematics and architecture, have been listed within top 50 for the first time. In terms of subject areas, the disciplines in engineering and technology performed best, whose global ranking rose from 29th to 26th (tied). The rankings of life sciences and medicine and natural sciences have also improved (by 11 and 13 respectively), and the rankings of art and humanity leveled off.
