2020 ICA-affiliated New Media International Conference Held in SJTU

On Intelligent Communication and Social Concerns in the time of COVID-19

On October 24th, the opening ceremony of the 2020 ICA-affiliated New Media International Conference, co-hosted by the School of Media and Communication, SJTU and the International Communication Society (ICA), was held in the school hall. In the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, the conference was themed and was held offline while being broadcast through online platforms. Many experts and scholars from abroad attended the conference, including Prof. Claes De Vreese from Amsterdam University, chairman of ICA; Prof. Noshir Contractor from Northwestern University, chairman-designate of ICA; Prof. Terry Flew from Queensland University of Technology, former chairman of ICA; Prof. Ang Peng Hwa from Nanyang Technological University, former Chairman of ICA; and Prof. Patrice Buzzanell from University of South Florida, former chairman of ICA. Deans of the School of Media and Communication in China and over 1,500 guests and students also attended the conference, either online or offline to share views and exchange ideas. Wang Weiming, member of the CPC Standing Committee and Vice President of SJTU, and Ji Ying, Deputy Director of Shanghai United Media Group, delivered the opening speeches. Prof. Li Benqian, also Dean of School of Media and Communication SJTU and Changjiang distinguished professor of Ministry of Education, presided over the opening ceremony.

Taking advantage of SJTU’s rich resources of engineering disciplines and upholding the idea of interdisciplinary education and industry-university-research cooperation, has taken the lead in education internationalization and made outstanding achievements in the past 18 years since its establishment. In 2020, its Media and Communication major ranked top three in ARWU. Graduates of the institute have been playing an important role in media industries at home and abroad.
