2018 SJTU “Student of the Year” Unveiled

On Dec. 13rd , SJTU "Student of the Year" review meeting was held on Minhang Campus. SJTU leaders attended the meeting, including Wang Weiming, SJTU Vice President, Chen Yexin, Deputy Director of SJTU Office of Academic Affairs, and Yang Jianjun and Chen Yao, Deputy Director of SJTU Office of Student Affairs. Teacher judges from various offices and previous winners participated in the meeting.

The evaluation was organized by SJTU Committee of Student Affairs and SJTU Youth League Committee. After the primary evaluation and expert evaluation, a total of 15 students became candidates of the final evaluation. After each candidate's self-introduction, expert judges and audiences could ask questions. After that, expert judges voted top 10 to be the "Student of the Year".

In the end, according to the result of the voting, 2018 SJTU "Student of the Year" award came to Wang Zhaojing, Qian Yun, Li Zhe, Ma Ke, Hu Mou, SJTU Soldiers, Cui Xiangyi, Wang Jiayi, Zhang Qinsheng and SJTU-BioX-Shanghai. The award of nomination came to Kong Fanmiao from SJTU School of Materials Science and Engineering, Jiang Yongli from School of Agriculture and Biology, Zhang Chilin from Zhiyuan College, Zhou Wenxing from School of International and Public Affairs, and Yan Xu from School of Foreign Languages.

Wang Zhaojing, a doctoral student from School of Naval Architecture, Ocean & Civil Engineering, was recommended for admission to doctoral research as top 1 in her undergraduate study. Until now, she has published nearly 20 papers, including 9 SCI papers with 2 of them in the top 1 professional journal as the first author. She has successively won the National Scholarship in her undergraduate and postgraduate study, and the Fund of Excellent Doctoral Dissertation as top 1. She has also won 27 awards, including the first prize in National Post-Graduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling and top 1 in the Provincial Mathematics Competition. She participated in a program for doctors to the countryside to spread scientific and literacy knowledge and offer medical service to farmers. She has participated in social practice for four consecutive years, awarded the grand prize of Shanghai "Zhixing Cup" and the national key program of "Doctors to the Countryside".

Qian Yun, a student of the eight-year clinical medicine program of School of Medicine, has already published 10 papers (accumulated impact factor of 66) in the top international journals by the first author. His main research direction is the repair of peripheral nerve injury and the development of new recycled materials. He has learned engineering by himself and has combined medicine and engineering in his research for the development of new biological materials. Engaging in both clinical and laboratory work, he has won the Shanghai "Future Star of Science and Technology" award, and has proposed hypothesis of "three-dimensional conductive stent to enhance bioelectrical conduction and to promote nerve regeneration".

Li Zhe is a master student from School of Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering, also the co-founder of AEYE-GO Team. The team has developed a technological method to identify sort of meals, providing a highly efficient, low-cost solution to group meals and the fast food industry. The method has come into use in canteens of major universities. Up to now, it has won the angel financing of 10 million from top 500 global leading enterprises. The project, representing SJTU, participated in the National Mass Entrepreneurship and Innovation Week and was reported by CCTV. The project has won eight national, provincial and municipal awards in competitions, such as the "China College Students' Entrepreneurship Competition", the "Internet +" Competition, and the China-US Young Maker Competition.

Mark, an undergraduate from School of Humanities, completed 14 Chinese courses with full GPA with diligence and passion. He is keen on traditional Chinese culture. He wears tang costume, plays allegro and cucurbit flute. He participated in numerous Chinese cultural competitions and performances, including "Chinese Bridge", a global Chinese language conference for foreigners. During his six years in China, he has traveled to more than 20 cities in China and took part in social practices in western China. He almost travelled through more than half of China.

Hu Mou, a master student from the School of Design, ceased study and joined the arm during undergraduate period. He served as a tank coach in the general equipment department. After returning to the university, he was recommended to the graduate school of university with the highest score of his major, and won the honor of outstanding graduate of Shanghai. Now he is involved in the Party construction of students in the School of Design.

Soldiers of SJTU entered the military camp with expectation of the SJTUers and returned with honor. Since 2002, 378 students have responded to the call and enlisted in the army. Of the 281 students who have been retired, 25 have won the honor of third-class merit, 52 have joined the Party, 377 have been awarded or awarded as outstanding soldiers.

Cui Xiangyi, a Ph.D. student from the School of Physics and Astronomy, is the backbone of the PandaX dark matter experiment team. Working with the Jinpingshan Underground Laboratory for the past five years, he is responsible for the operation of the PandaX-II detector. He designed the PandaX-4T rectification and refrigeration system and published three PRL papers as the first author, one of which was published as a cover article.

Wang Jiayi, an undergraduate from the School of Media and Communication, is the head of the official WeChat public account of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. She teaches new media work with the knowledge of communication, and publishes papers in the core journals of international SSCI with the theme of female consciousness and gender. Received Best Paper Award at the Prague ICA Global Communication Forum.

Zhang Qinsheng, an undergraduate from the School of Mechanical and Power Engineering, led the team to win the first RoboCup World Championship in the history of SJTU in the 2017 Nagoya World Cup, and won the RoboCup2018 China Open Championship; He participated in the development of AGV unmanned vehicle. The developed robots are leading the domestic industry and successfully exhibited at the 2018 China International Industry Fair.

SJTU-BioX-Shanghai, representing SJTU in the International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition (iGEM), has set a brilliant record of ten years of competition with innovative spirit and teamwork, winning nine gold and one bronze. In 2018, he won the Nomination for the Ninth Gold Medal and Best Medical Diagnostics Project.
