The 7th International Workshop on Ship Hydrodynamics (IWSH) was held at SJTU from September 16 to 19, 2011. It was attended by experts and scholars from the United Kingdom, France, Norway, Sweden, Ireland, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Qatar, Chinese Taiwan, China and other countries and regions. IWSH 2011 was organized by the School of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Civil Engineering, and sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Chinese Towing Tank Conference (CTTC) and Ship Mechanics Committee of the Chinese Society of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineers (CSNAME). It centered on the latest developments of ship hydrodynamics and its applications in ocean engineering as ship hydrodynamics is the key theory in this field. The experts and scholars discussed deep-sea hydrodynamics, new-concept energy-saving offshore platform, ship design and the hydrodynamics of high performance ships and new propellers.

Three world-renown experts on ship hydrodynamics and ocean engineering, Prof. Odd Magnus Faltinsen from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Prof. Yonghwan Kim from Seoul National University (South Korea) and Prof. Wu Guoxiong from University College London, gave a one-hour keynote report respectively.

82 papers were accepted from the total 116 paper abstracts received, 75 for discussion at the workshop. There were 15 sessions, each assigned with a research focus. The experts and scholars had heated discussions on the latest results, progress and directions in the research of ship hydrodynamics and ocean engineering. They shared with each other their research experience and promoted academic cooperation and exchange.

Decided by the International Academic Committee of IWSH, the next IWSH will be held in Seoul, South Korea in 2013.
