Cooperative Research Marks breakthrough in High Specific-Energy Li-Metal Anodes

Recently, a paper entitled "Design Principles for Self-forming Interfaces Enabling Stable Lithium Metal Anodes" was published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS). It is a joint research by Li Linsen and Ma Zifeng's team from School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, SJTU, Prof. Venkatasubramanian Viswanathan from Carnegie Mellon University and Prof. Yet-Ming Chiang from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. SJTU doctoral student Zhu Yingying and Vikram Pande from Carnegie Mellon University are the co-first authors of this paper, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University is the first corresponding affiliation.

With strong reducibility, lithium metal can react spontaneously with electrolyte constituents, forming a "solid-electrolyte interphase" (SEI). The research reveals the correlational mechanism between SEI compositions, Li-metal electrodeposition behavior, and the coulombic efficiency. It also establishes the design principles of high-performance SEI, which provides guidance for advancing development of high energy-density and long-cycle life Li-metal rechargeable batteries.

Moreover, the patent (US20170288281, WO Patent 2017176936) developed during the early phase of the program has been licensed to 24 M Technologies, USA for application in semi-solid (slurry) battery.
