The east gate features traditional Chinese architectural style with vermeil walls and green glazed tiles. With dragon-head ornaments on the ridge and two white marble lions sitting in the front, the gate guards the campus from the clamor of the world.

The old Zhong Yuan (老中院) on Xuhui Campus is the oldest building in SJTU. Built in 1899, with plain brick walls and a colonnade in the front, this building has been witnessing the over-a-century history of the university.

Built in 1919, the old library on Xuhui campus was remodeled in 1934 with an east wing as a stack room, able to accommodate 200,000 books. In 1995, the three-storied building was renewed and renamed as University History and Alumni Hall.
