Joint Institute

UM-SJTU Joint Institute (JI), founded in 2006, represents a strategic global partnership between the two top universities in US and China, University of Michigan (UM) and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). The Chinese Government and both partner universities are fully committed to develop JI as a world-class institute for engineering education.

As a specially designated reform zone in SJTU, the JI has merged and utilized the best practices of both universities, whose primary mission is to establish a highly reputable institute for innovative global engineering education and research activities that will eventually extend to various other academic disciplines. Students can benefit from the Institute’s top caliber faculty from the globe contributing to its global education. During the past nine years, JI has developed tremendously and achieved extraordinary accomplishments, such as “First-Class Award for National Education Reform” (2009), “Model of Chinese Higher Education Reform” by Chinese State Council in 2011, and “Model for International Education in Shanghai” (2012). In 2014, JI was the first Chinese institution to win the prestigious Andrew Heiskell Award for Innovation in International Education—one of the highest honors in international higher education. In a short time, JI has set a successful example for Sino-American educational collaboration in China, which has made a great impact on other Chinese universities.

JI offers excellent education in Engineering. On the one hand, JI recruits top students through SJTU and supports them with the best educational resources in China; on the other hand, JI introduce them/students to the advanced educational systems of the University of Michigan: JI conducts all courses in English. In collaboration with UM, JI offers the UM-SJTU Dual-Degree Program, SGUS, and Study Abroad Programs, which provide a rich international academic environment for JI’s undergraduate and graduate students. Currently, the undergraduate program offers two majors: Mechanical Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering. JI’s core courses such as "Introduction to Engineering," "Engineering Probabilistic Methods," and “Capstone Design” have been selected as "Shanghai Jiao Tong University Excellent Courses" and " Model English Teaching Course for International Students”.

Since the first class of JI graduated in 2010, more than 80% of its graduates have continued on to pursue graduate degrees, mostly in top universities of the world (90%). JI graduates who chose to work have all been hired by top domestic or multi-national companies. Their outstanding job performance, creativity, team spirit, and communication skills have been recognized by their employers.

In June 2012, SJTU and University of Michigan signed a 10-year (2012-2022) agreement on strategic collaboration, laying a solid foundation for further Sino-US education cooperation.
