The School of Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering

The School of Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering (SEIEE) at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) was established in 2001, with its glorious history traced back to 1908 when the discipline of Electric Machines was founded. With a century-long history of reputation in research and education, SEIEE is crowned as “the Cradle of Chinese Electrical Engineers”. The school now has 12 departments and principal units including the Department of Electrical Engineering, the Department of Automation, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the Department of Electronic Engineering, the Department of Instrument Science and Engineering, the Department of Micro-Nano Electronics, the School of Cyber Security, the School of Software, the Academy of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, the Center for Advanced Electronic Materials and Devices, the Center for Teaching and Learning Development, and the Cooperative Medianet Innovation Center.

  • Department of Electrical Engineering

    Department of Electrical Engineering, founded in 1908, includes five sub-disciplines, power system and its automation, high voltage and insulation technology, electric machines and electric apparatus, power electronics and power drives, and theory and new technology of electrical engineering. There are more than 98 faculties, which includes 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 chair professor of 1000 Talent Plan, 3 professors of New Century University Excellent Talents Program, 2 professionals of 1000 Talents Plan Program for Youth, 7 Shanghai Pujiang Scholars, 2 Shanghai Dongfang Scholars. Now the department has 26 professors (included researchers) and 44 associate professors.

  • Department of Automation

    The Department of Automation is to contribute Control Science and Engineering and is hosting the Key Laboratory of System Control and Information Processing, Ministry of Education. Since established by Prof. Zhongjun Zhang, a leading scholar for control theory and system engineering, the Department has become an important research center in China for control theory of complex systems, process control and optimization, intelligent robotics, pattern recognition, bio-information, intelligent traffic system, etc. In the Department, more than 70 faculties, including foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, IEEE, and IFAC Fellows, are working here and offering Bachelor, Master, and Ph.D programs.

  • Department of Computer Science & Engineering

    Department of Computer Science and Engineering, founded in 1984, has formed strong research groups in the areas of theoretical computer science, parallel and distributed systems, computer networking, intelligent human-computer interaction, and cryptography and information security. “Computer science and technology” is the first-level discipline of CSE Department, in addition to three second-level disciplines -- “computer software and theory” , “computer system structure”, and “computer application”. The 80 faculty members includes 5 chair professors of 1000 Talent Plan, 5 professionals of 1000 Talent Plan for Youth, 4 recipients of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 1 Cheung Kong Scholar, 1 IEEE fellow, and etc. CSE department offers a 4-year undergraduate program, a 2.5-year master program, and a PhD program, and addtionally provides a curriculum instructed in English.

  • Department of Electronic Engineering

    The Department of Electronic Engineering combines of two first-level disciplines, Information and Communication Engineering and Electronic Science and Technology, including four second-level disciplines, Telecommunications and Information System (state key discipline), Signal and Information Processing (state key cultivation discipline), Circuit and System and Electromagnetic Fields and Microwave Techniques (state key discipline). The main research areas include image communication (digital television and video wireless transmission), mobile communication, optical communication, network and information security, signal integrity of high-speed circuit and radio frequency antenna technology, digital signal processing, design of chips and systems. The department boasts an excellent faculty team with 126 teachers and administrative staff, including 3 academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering.

  • Department of Instrument Science and Engineering

    Department of Instrument Science and Engineering was established in 1975 by the academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Zhu Wuhua as the president of SJTU. In 1986, the discipline of inertial technology and its navigation equipment was approved as the first authorized doctorate degree in navigation area in China. In 2000, the Ph.D degree of Instrument Science and Technology can be issued with the permission of Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. There are four research institutes, the institute of advanced sensors and intelligent instruments, the institute of medical precision engineering and special micro-robots, the institute of nano-functional materials and scientific instruments as well as the institute of special environmental measurement and navigation technology.

  • Department of Micro-Nano Electronics

    The Department of Micro-Nano Electronics owns one National Training Bases for IC talents, one Key Laboratory for Thin Film and Microfabrication Technology of Ministry of Education (TFMLab) and one National Key Laboratory of Science and Technology on Micro/Nano Fabrication. It has 62 full-time teachers including 19 professors and 29 associate professors. 3 involved in "Thousand Talents Long-term Program", 1 chosen in "Young Talents Program",1 Distinguished Professors of "Cheung Kong Scholar Program". It undertakes national 973 Programs, National Science and Technology Major Projects, 863 Programs, NSFC Projects. It also pays strong attention to the internationalization and industrialization of talents cultivation.

  • School of Cyber Security

    The School of Cyber Security, established in October 2000, is a teaching and research unit focusing on cyber security, communication and information systems, and computer application technology. The school offers a 4-year undergraduate program, a 2.5-year master program and a PhD program, with a total enrollment of about 400 undergraduate students and over 200 graduate students. The 60 faculty members include 2 members of Chinese Academy of Sciences/Engineering (adjunct professors), 1 New Century National Hundred-Thousand-Ten-Thousand Talent, 3 New Century Excellent Talents in University, 3 Shanghai Subject Chief Scientists, 1 Shanghai Pujiang Scholar, and 3 Shanghai Science and Technology Committee Rising-Star scholars.

  • School of Software

    The School of Software is the earliest schools of software engineering in China, and it has been exploring and innovating software talent cultivation mode. The School of Software owns four discipline directions: software engineering theory and technology, system software, smart city and digital media. It has established joint students practice bases with famous enterprises such as Morgan Stanley, Microsoft, Intel, Huawei, Ali. The School of Software currently has 38 faculty and staff members in which there are 6 full professors and 16 associate professors. Prof. Yuxi Fu is national outstanding youth fund winner and Shanghai outstanding academic leader.

  • Academy of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering

    Academy of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering was founded at 2011, with the purpose of facilitating inter-discipline research, strengthening communication and teamwork, achieving the mutual development between research areas, teams, projects, research platforms and industrial applications. Academy of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering highly values innovations in electronic-electrical-related disciplines. The department has seven sub-disciplines:Navigation and location based services, Intelligent Sensing and Recognition, Smart Transmission and Distribution, Superconductor, Quantum Sensing and Information Processing, Big Data Technology, Brain-inspired Application Technology. The department has developed several research teams with competitive superiority and strong connections to industry in the past few years.

  • The Center for Advanced Electronic Materials and Devices

    Center for Advanced Electronic Materials and Devices (AEMD) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University was invested by the ‘985 Project’ of Ministry of Education. The center intends to build university-level micro-nano fabrication and testing platform and perform the state of art research on semiconductor materials and devices, optoelectronic materials and devices, MEMS technologies, and IC chip packaging technologies. AEMD center provides a cooperation and communication platform for different research fields and a practice base for high level talents’ training. The center is also opened to the research affiliates and industry outside SJTU on related project cooperation and micro-nano fabrication services.

  • Center for Teaching and Learning Development

    Center for Teaching and Learning Development of SEIEE, based on the National Demonstration Center for Experimental Electrical Education of SJTU, is an integral unit aiming at enhancing the quality of undergraduate education by integrating the resources of the different departments in SEIEE. The center sets up various basic electrical related courses and practice projects for all the undergraduate students in the university, carries out kinds of scientific and technological innovation and competition activities to cultivate students' innovative consciousness.

  • Cooperative Medianet Innovation Center

    Initiated by SJTU and jointly launched by Peking University, SARFT Academy of Broadcasting Science, SARFT Academy of Broadcasting Planning, CCTV, Radio and Television Shanghai, CAS Institute of Acoustic, CAS Institute of Computing Technology, NERC-DTV, Huawei and Baidu, Cooperative Medianet Innovation Center (CMIC) is the only identified cooperative innovation center in digital media field in China. The research work of CMIC focuses on smart network transmission, smart media processing and smart service engine, consisting of four labs, namely System Test Lab, Media Cloud Lab, Hybrid Network Lab and Audio-video Evaluation Lab. There are more than 20 faculty members and about 120 students.
