Zhang Jie




Born in 1958, Professor ZHANG Jie got his PhD in Optical and Atomic & Molecular Physics from the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China in 1988. Then he started his career as a research scientist in the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. There he made important achievements and received numerous academic honors and awards in such areas as: x-ray lasers, high field physics, and laser-plasma physics. Due to his academic achievements, Professor Dr. ZHANG Jie was elected in 2003 as Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the highest academic title in China. Prior to his appointment in November 2006 as President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Professor Dr. ZHANG Jie had consecutively held positions as: Director General, Bureau of Basic Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences (2003-2006), Director, Chinese Spallation Neutron Source (2002-2006), Deputy Director, Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (1998-2003). Apart from being a professor and Director of the Laboratory of Optical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, he concurrently serves on the editorial board of a number of Chinese and overseas professional journals, such as: High Energy Density Physics, UK, Chemical Physics Letters, USA, and Acta Physica Sinica, China. He is also member, member of council, and co-chair of a number of national and international committees, such as: Association of Asia Pacific Physical Societies, Asian Laser Network, International workshop on Fast Ignition of Fusion Targets, High Power Laser Committee of OECD, etc. Professor Dr. ZHANG Jie’s highlight overseas experiences include: Senior Research Scientist, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, UK; and Alexander-von-Humboldt Research Fellow, Max-Planck-Institut für Quantenoptik, Germany (1989-1990).
