Fluid Mechanics and Naval Hydrodynamics

Biography

Professor He, born in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, is an eminent expert of fluid mechanics and a pioneer in high-speed hydraulics. In 1952, he graduated from the Department of Naval Architecture, Tongji University. And in 1958, he studied at Tsinghua University as a graduate student. Now he is professor at the School of Architecture and Mechanism Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He was elected academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in October 1995. He is one of the pioneers of the principles of ship architecture, the hydraulic design of hydrofoil and its wave making.

In the 1970s, he initiated the research on the propellers' vibration resistance, and the result of the research made the ship's vibration-reduction performance comparable with that of the advanced foreign countries. In recent years, Professor He devoted himself to the study of high-speed launching and diving of missile and torpedo and solved the problems of vapor hindrance. The achievements he made in the field not only aided the development of underwater weapons but also yielded a profit up to ten million yuan. Therefore, his research achievements have been awarded for many times either 1st or 2nd prizes by provinces and ministries, and his scientific research group engaged in the study of launching and diving has become an international key group.
